World Nuclear Association: $6 Trillion Investment Needed for 2050 Goals

Global nuclear investment is falling short of the $6 trillion needed to meet 2050 capacity expansion targets, warns the World Nuclear Association.

The World Nuclear Association warned on Wednesday that current global investment levels in nuclear energy are insufficient to achieve the industry's capacity expansion goals by 2050. According to the trade group's latest report, approximately $6 trillion will be required to meet internationally established targets as nuclear power gains renewed attention amid growing energy security concerns and surging electricity demand.

A resurgence in nuclear development is underway across Europe and the United States, driven by commitments to expand clean energy portfolios and address rising power consumption from artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers. Meanwhile, major developing economies including China and India have announced ambitious plans to significantly expand their nuclear generation capacity in the coming decades.

The investment gap underscores a critical challenge for the global energy transition. Despite widespread policy support for nuclear expansion, the nuclear sector is facing financing constraints that could jeopardize the timeline for meeting decarbonization targets and ensuring adequate power supply for emerging technologies and population growth.
