The U.S. oil and gas drilling sector maintained stability this week as the total active rig count held steady at 588, according to data released by Baker Hughes on Friday. While the overall count showed no week-over-week movement, the year-over-year comparison underscores continued strength in drilling activity, with the total count up 49 rigs from the same period last year, signaling robust investment in domestic energy production.
Breaking down the latest numbers, the count of active oil rigs increased by three during the reporting period to reach 454, positioning the sector 43 rigs ahead of year-ago levels. Conversely, natural gas rigs declined by three to 124 during the same week, though they remain one unit above the prior year's comparable period. Miscellaneous rigs remained unchanged at 10 units.
The data reflects an active drilling landscape as operators continue to balance production capacity with market dynamics. The year-over-year gains in both oil and total rig counts demonstrate that despite recent volatility in energy markets, U.S. operators are maintaining investment in exploration and production activities.
