TotalEnergies Pursues Offshore Exploration Contract in Syria

French energy major TotalEnergies is in talks with Damascus officials about an offshore exploration contract in Syria's largely unexplored waters.

TotalEnergies is advancing discussions with Syrian government officials regarding a potential offshore exploration contract, according to the French supermajor's Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanné. During a recent visit to Damascus, Pouyanné indicated the company is working with consortium partners to assess Syria's largely untapped offshore reserves, which have historically received minimal exploration activity.

The executive stated that TotalEnergies plans to pursue formal contract negotiations with Syrian counterparts based on the preliminary findings. "Syria's offshore area has never really been explored historically, so we have partnered with other companies to look into it," Pouyanné told reporters, as reported by RFI. The comments underscore the energy sector's continued interest in accessing new hydrocarbon resources in the Middle East amid global demand considerations.

The exploration initiative represents a strategic expansion for TotalEnergies in the region and reflects the company's broader portfolio diversification efforts. If formalized, the contract would grant the French firm rights to conduct seismic surveys and drilling operations in Syrian territorial waters, positioning it to evaluate the commercial viability of potential oil and gas deposits.
