Salt River Project, one of the largest public utilities in the United States, plans to bring a significant mixed-resource energy project before its board for approval in September. According to Utility Dive, the proposed Marigold Energy Center would be located approximately 45 miles south of Phoenix and represents a strategic investment in diversified generation capacity to meet regional electricity demand.
The facility is designed with a multi-modal approach to power generation and storage. The project would include 600 MW of solar generation, 400 MW of battery storage capability, and up to 675 MW of natural gas-fired generation, along with a new transmission substation. This combination of renewable and conventional resources reflects a broader industry trend toward hybrid systems that can balance intermittent renewable output with reliable baseload and peaking capacity.
The mixed-resource model allows SRP to leverage solar's low operational costs during peak daylight hours while maintaining flexible gas generation for times when solar production declines or demand spikes. The battery storage component enhances grid stability and provides rapid response capabilities. If approved, the project would strengthen SRP's generation portfolio and support the utility's long-term reliability and resource adequacy objectives in an evolving energy landscape.
