Shell Projects 65% Surge in Global LNG Demand by 2050

Shell forecasts global liquefied natural gas demand will rise 65% by mid-century, driven by surging consumption in Asia.

According to Shell's 2026 LNG Outlook, global liquefied natural gas demand is poised to expand significantly over the coming decades, with the world's largest LNG trader projecting a 65% increase from 2025 levels by 2050. The growth outlook is anchored primarily in South and Southeast Asia, where natural gas consumption is accelerating rapidly. The forecast comes as the sector processed 422 million tons of LNG globally in the prior year, underscoring the scale of current international trade flows.

The company's optimistic long-term outlook contrasts sharply with near-term headwinds. Industry expectations at the start of this year anticipated robust growth in 2026 LNG trade volumes. However, Middle East regional tensions disrupted those plans, with conflict-related production constraints reducing available LNG supply by approximately one-fifth on a monthly basis. The supply disruptions have translated into elevated spot market prices for liquefied gas, tempering near-term expansion prospects despite the underlying structural demand drivers.

Shell's projections reflect confidence in the role of natural gas as a transition fuel supporting global energy demand while renewables expand. The divergence between robust long-term demand forecasts and volatile near-term market conditions underscores the geopolitical and economic complexities shaping energy markets. Market participants will be watching supply chain resilience and regional demand recovery closely as the year unfolds.
