PPL-Blackstone Joint Venture Secures 5 GW Gas Capacity for Data Centers

A PPL-Blackstone partnership has secured 5 GW of gas turbine capacity to support Pennsylvania's growing data center demand, signaling a shift toward direct power contracting in the region.

PPL and Blackstone have jointly secured 5 gigawatts of gas turbine capacity designated for data center operations in Pennsylvania, according to Utility Dive. The procurement underscores the region's substantial power needs driven by the expansion of data center infrastructure across the state.

PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission operator, has scheduled a backstop reliability auction for late September to address capacity concerns. However, according to PJM CEO Vincent Sorgi, bilateral contracting between generators and power consumers is expected to become the primary mechanism for adding generation capacity to the region, rather than formal competitive auctions.

The shift toward direct bilateral agreements reflects broader market trends as data centers and other large industrial users increasingly negotiate long-term power supply contracts directly with generators. This approach allows companies to secure stable pricing and guaranteed capacity while providing generators with predictable revenue streams independent of traditional auction mechanisms.
