According to Bloomberg, Nvidia is in preliminary discussions to provide up to $250 billion in financing guarantees to enable OpenAI to lease computing capacity from a planned $500 billion, 10-gigawatt data center facility in Ohio. The SoftBank-led infrastructure project, located in southern Ohio, is designed to eventually deliver 10 gigawatts of computing power—equivalent to the output of approximately 10 large nuclear reactors when fully operational.
The proposed arrangement has drawn investor scrutiny regarding potential circular financing patterns within the artificial intelligence sector. The deal structure, whereby Nvidia would guarantee financing for a customer's use of infrastructure that relies on Nvidia chips, exemplifies the interconnected capital flows that have fueled rapid expansion in AI infrastructure spending.
The transaction underscores mounting questions about the sustainability of capital intensity in the AI industry, particularly regarding whether infrastructure buildouts are being supported by genuine demand or by financing structures that may obscure underlying economic fundamentals.
