India Pledges Five Small Modular Reactors by 2033

India's Atomic Energy Minister outlines plan to deploy five domestically built small modular reactors by 2033 as part of nuclear expansion strategy.

India is accelerating its nuclear energy ambitions with a commitment to construct five small modular reactors (SMRs) domestically by 2033, according to Atomic Energy Minister Jitendra Singh. In a written response to lawmakers, Singh outlined the reactors as a cornerstone of India's broader strategy to expand nuclear power generation capacity over the next two decades, signaling the country's intent to strengthen its clean energy portfolio amid growing electricity demand.

The initiative builds on work already underway at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India's leading nuclear research institution operating under the Department of Atomic Energy. BARC is currently developing the Bharat Small Modular Reactor, a 220-MW unit designed to meet the technical specifications for India's SMR deployment roadmap. Small modular reactors offer advantages including scalability, reduced capital requirements compared to conventional nuclear plants, and potential deployment in diverse geographic and industrial settings.

The push reflects India's broader energy diversification efforts as the nation works to balance growing power needs with decarbonization goals. SMR technology has gained international momentum as countries seek flexible nuclear solutions, and India's domestic development capability underscores its commitment to achieving energy independence while reducing reliance on imported fuel sources.
