Hybrid Renewable Projects Could Accelerate Europe's Clean Energy Transition

Europe has substantial untapped potential to combine wind and solar with existing hydropower facilities, according to new analysis from energy research firm Ember.

According to a new report from think tank Ember Energy, Europe's renewable energy infrastructure could be substantially expanded by developing hybrid projects that integrate wind and solar generation with existing hydropower sites. The research identifies approximately 25 GW of additional wind and solar capacity that could be deployed alongside current hydropower installations, representing a significant opportunity to accelerate the continent's decarbonization goals.

Rather than viewing renewable energy projects as standalone operations, developers and energy companies are recognizing the strategic value of combining complementary technologies on shared sites. Hybrid configurations can maximize energy output and provide more stable power generation by leveraging the different generation profiles of wind, solar, and hydroelectric sources. This approach allows utilities to optimize land use while reducing infrastructure costs compared to developing separate facilities.

As Europe intensifies efforts to meet its climate commitments and reduce fossil fuel dependence, hybrid renewable projects on existing hydropower assets present a practical pathway to scale clean energy capacity. The strategy capitalizes on established sites with existing grid connections and operational expertise, potentially accelerating deployment timelines compared to greenfield development.
