According to a new analysis from BloombergNEF, the world's installed nuclear capacity is projected to expand significantly over the next decade, growing from 372 gigawatts at the end of 2025 to 535 gigawatts by 2036. This 44% increase reflects mounting global demand for low-carbon baseload power and a strategic pivot toward nuclear energy across major economies seeking to enhance energy security and meet climate objectives.
China is positioned to lead this expansion, nearly doubling its nuclear capacity from 59 gigawatts to 102 gigawatts, a surge that would establish it as the world's largest nuclear power generator, surpassing the United States. India, meanwhile, is expected to substantially increase its own nuclear capacity as part of broader efforts to secure its long-term energy supply and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
The projected growth underscores a reversal of decades-long skepticism about nuclear power, as nations worldwide increasingly recognize its role in achieving decarbonization targets while maintaining reliable electricity grids.
