Global Carbon Emissions Reach Record Levels Amid Clean Energy Expansion

Global emissions hit all-time highs in 2025 despite accelerating renewable energy adoption, according to the latest comprehensive energy analysis.

The Energy Institute has released its 2026 Statistical Review of World Energy, a comprehensive annual assessment developed in partnership with Ember and in collaboration with major consulting firms KPMG and Kearney. The review, which has served as a definitive resource for global energy data for more than seven decades under previous publication by BP, reveals a complex energy transition picture marked by contradictory trends in emissions and renewable capacity growth.

The latest data underscores a persistent challenge facing the global energy sector: despite mounting investments in renewable sources and expanding clean energy capacity worldwide, total carbon emissions continue to climb to record levels. This divergence highlights the complexity of decarbonization efforts, as growing electricity demand and industrial activity in developing economies have offset gains achieved through renewable deployment and energy efficiency improvements.

The comprehensive report tracks major energy categories including crude oil, natural gas, coal, renewable sources, electricity generation, and carbon emissions. The findings suggest that transitioning global energy systems requires acceleration beyond current renewable expansion rates, with policymakers and industry facing mounting pressure to align infrastructure investments with climate commitments.
