Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has initiated a voluntary recall of 13 powdered beverage mixes due to potential Salmonella contamination linked to a dairy supplier. The San Francisco-based confectionery issued the recall after California Dairies—a major milk powder producer—recalled its product, which was used as an ingredient in the affected mixes. The FDA published the official recall notice on April 28, with no illnesses reported to date.
The recall targets bulk products primarily distributed to foodservice and institutional customers, though Ghirardelli notes that some items may have reached consumers through e-commerce channels. Affected products include various frappe mixes, hot cocoa pouches, and ground cocoa powders in bulk sizes ranging from 4 to 30 pounds. Despite internal testing showing no contamination in their own facilities, the company decided to pull the products out of an abundance of caution and is working to retrieve distributed inventory.
Retailers and businesses that received affected products should contact Ghirardelli's dedicated hotline at 1-855-744-1426 for return instructions and replacement or refund options. Individual consumers who purchased or consumed impacted products can call 1-844-776-0419 or submit a contact form on Ghirardelli's website. The company's customer service team is available to address concerns and process claims.
Salmonella infections typically develop within 8 to 72 hours of exposure and cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. While most healthy people recover within a week without treatment, young children under 5, adults over 65, and immunocompromised individuals face heightened risk. Anyone experiencing symptoms after consuming a recalled product should seek medical attention and contact Ghirardelli.
