Eni and TotalEnergies have committed to developing the Cronos gas field located in deep waters offshore Cyprus, marking the Mediterranean nation's inaugural hydrocarbon production venture. According to OilPrice, the two European energy majors have secured a final investment decision to move forward with the project, which aims to begin delivering gas to market by 2028. The offshore block holds an estimated 3 trillion cubic feet of gas initially in place, representing a substantial addition to regional energy supplies.
The partnership structure divides operational control and equity stakes equally, with Eni serving as project operator and holding a 50 percent stake while TotalEnergies maintains the remaining half. This balanced arrangement reflects the significant capital requirements and technical expertise needed to develop deepwater resources in the Mediterranean basin, a strategically important region for European energy security.
The Cronos project represents a strategic milestone for Cyprus, which has sought to monetize its offshore natural gas reserves as part of broader efforts to develop its hydrocarbon sector. The venture also underscores the continued commitment of major international oil and gas companies to Mediterranean energy development despite the global energy transition.
