China's CNOOC Deploys Record 16MW Floating Wind Platform

China National Offshore Oil Corporation launches world's first 16-megawatt floating wind turbine for offshore operations.

China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), one of the country's largest state-owned oil producers, announced the operational launch of what it claims is the world's first 16-megawatt tension-leg platform (TLP) floating wind turbine. According to the company, the Haiyou Anlan platform has begun supplying renewable power to the Lufeng Oilfield via a subsea cable spanning 4.3 kilometers, marking a significant step in integrating offshore wind generation with traditional energy infrastructure.

The deployment reflects CNOOC's deepening commitment to leveraging its offshore engineering expertise for renewable energy applications. Floating wind platforms like tension-leg systems represent an emerging frontier in offshore wind technology, allowing turbines to operate in deeper waters where fixed-foundation installations are impractical. The 16-megawatt capacity appears to position this deployment among the industry's largest floating installations to date.

The project underscores broader momentum in offshore wind development globally, as energy companies seek to expand clean power capacity while managing the capital and logistical demands of marine construction.
